After traveling more miles than I could count and spending endless hours in meetings, I decided to leave the corporate world in the mid ‘90s. My plan was to come home to Western Pennsylvania and build a creative small business. With lots of careful planning — and hours of volunteer work by my family and friends — Morninglory opened during a blizzard in February, 1996. (I'm happy to say that many customers who made their way to that very snowy grand opening still shop at our store!)
I never worked in retail, but was very experienced at shopping. I knew what a really great store should look -- and feel -- like. A warm, welcoming retreat where the staff knows your name. A place where you can choose from an abundant selection of high quality, unique products in beautiful displays. Where you find delightful surprises around every turn, and attention to all the details that make shopping fun and gift-giving a pleasure. These things were, and still are, my measures of success.
When Morninglory opened, we sold home accents, seasonal decor, and a few women's accessories in our original 800 square feet. The tiny counter doubled as a floral design work table and gift wrapping hub. We stashed inventory in my mother's dining room and my car trunk. It was intense on-the-job learning, adapting nearly every day to customer suggestions and business realities. Gradually the store took root and grew, thanks to our very loyal customers and a dedicated, hard-working staff.
In October 2001, Morninglory tripled in size with a new emphasis on women's accessories. We added in-store Brighton and Vera Bradley boutiques and a much broader selection of jewelry and fashion accessories. Though we were larger, our focus remained the same: giving you the kind of shopping experience you'd like to have again and again. The kind that you tell all your friends about.
Morninglory's commitment to style, selection, and service has been recognized by our customers and by manufacturers nationwide. We're especially proud to have been named Pittsburgh's best family-owned business in 2009. We've also received special honors from Brighton, Chamilia, John Medeiros, Peggy Karr Glass, and Vera Bradley.
Come see for yourself why Morninglory is Pittsburgh's favorite destination for women's accessories and gifts!
